Altroquando The Girls Of San Frediano
For various reasons, I have dedicated a large part of my summer to the “studio” in Florence, and at this juncture I realized that I had a series of very serious gaps to fill in this regard. Among these is the reading by Vasco Pratolini. And I started with this: “The girls of San Frediano”, a long story rather than a novel, read almost in one breath and light only in appearance. The girls in the title are Tosca, Gina, Mafalda, Bice, Loretta, humble girls, neighborhood girls, Sanfredianine, the author repeats, an adjective “of place” that reveals their humble extraction, sometimes “vulgarity”, others the simplicity, but more often than not the tough character, the combative nature. Yet the protagonists of the book are not them. The girls are the “choir”, before “concubines” and then of “Erinni”, to Bob, the neighborhood womanizer….
